The Lasting Influence of the Health Foundation: Live Health Little Havana

Healthy Little Havana: An Investment in Community Empowerment

“Health Foundation of South Florida’s long-term support has been instrumental in expanding vital services, reducing food insecurity, and ensuring a more resilient future for Little Havana.”

Alejandro Diaz, Community Liaison Coordinator, Live Healthy Little Havana

Following a highly competitive process, Little Havana was one of two communities selected in 2013 by the Health Foundation for funding to establish a Healthy Community Partnership. The Health Foundation’s investment, a $3.75 million grant over six years, drove the launch of Live Healthy Little Havana (HLH).  What began as a bold vision to grow local leaders’ capacity to help make Little Havana a healthier place to live, work, and play has endured.

Through partnerships, grassroots leadership, and community engagement, the initiative evolved into Healthy Little Havana. By hiring local residents who understand their community’s language, culture, and lived experiences, HLH built a trusted team that continues to create sustainable solutions that promote health and improve the quality of life in this historic Miami neighborhood.

“As a Little Havana resident, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative impact of HLH on our neighborhood.  From our community gardens, mobile farmer’s markets, and financial literacy workshops to our safe street programs, we have empowered our neighbors to plan and act together for a healthier future”, says Program Manager Islara X. Souto.

With a reach of more than 37,000 residents, HLH continually engages community members to develop new strategies for improving health outcomes, resident resiliency, and quality of life in Little Havana.

Today, HLH stands as a powerful example of how sustained, community-driven investments can transform health and well-being, paving the way for positive change for generations to come.
