Good Health Clinic: Neighbors Caring for Neighbors in the Florida Keys

“I had a heart attack and couldn’t afford care. I thought my time had come,” he said. “But Good Health Clinic gave me hope. I stopped smoking and started eating right, and now I’m back at work, full of energy. They didn’t just help me feel better; they gave me back my life.”

In 2004, the Good Health Clinic opened its doors just a few days a week to serve uninsured residents of the Florida Keys. Two decades later, it has grown into the region’s medical home for more than 500 low-income patients each year, serving the community five days a week and delivering comprehensive primary care.

The Health Foundation has invested more than $800,000 to support the clinic’s growth and operations. Today, Good Health Clinic stands as the only full-time free clinic in the Keys, providing comprehensive services, ensuring that residents no longer have to travel for hours to access care.

Good Health Clinic was built by a caring community determined to make health and hope possible for everyone. Doctors, volunteers, donors, and partners pool their time and skills because they see the need every day and believe in caring for one another.

In the Keys, access and affordability are particularly daunting for the working class. The clinic bridges those challenges, helping neighbors stay healthy, work, and care for their families. Its mission is simple: to ensure that the burdens of illness are never compounded by inequity.

For Tim W., a long-time Keys resident, that mission became personal.

“I had a heart attack and couldn’t afford care. I thought my time had come,” he said. “But Good Health Clinic gave me hope. I stopped smoking and started eating right, and now I’m back at work, full of energy. They didn’t just help me feel better; they gave me back my life.”

Patients describe the clinic as a “godsend” and a “lifeline.” The care they receive restores more than health; it restores trust, dignity, and possibility.

Since helping to launch the clinic in 2004, the Health Foundation’s long-term support, including funding for a full-time nurse practitioner, has provided stability and capacity to serve a growing population. Today, the clinic continues to adapt as costs rise, and patients’ needs expand beyond healthcare to include food, housing, and emotional well-being.

For Good Health Clinic, success means that no one in the Keys must choose between rent and medicine or caring for their children and themselves. It means everyone, regardless of income, has the chance to live, work, and thrive in good health.
