Investing in Food Security for
Broward County Families

In Broward County, far too many of our neighbors are struggling to put food on the table. Families are making impossible choices every day: between paying rent and buying groceries, filling their gas tank and feeding their children. None of us should have to make these kinds of decisions.

The need is great and growing. More than 250,000 people in Broward County experience food insecurity, roughly one in every eight residents. In September alone, more than 141,000 families relied on SNAP benefits to help make ends meet. These numbers are a stark reminder of just how many households are one unexpected crisis away from hunger.

The recent threat of a prolonged federal government shutdown and the resulting disruptions to SNAP exposed just how close many families are to the edge. While the shutdown ultimately ended, the experience made clear that hunger is a persistent, structural challenge that demands ongoing community partnership and action.

A Coordinated Countywide Response

In response to this urgent need, a coalition of Broward County civic and philanthropic leaders has come together to take coordinated action. Together, the partners have raised approximately $1.5 million to expand food distribution through local food banks and community pantries, ensuring more families have consistent access to nutritious food.

This unprecedented collaborative effort is led by Broward County Commissioner Nan Rich, working alongside:

  • Broward County
  • United Way Broward
  • Community Foundation of Broward
  • Children’s Services Council of Broward County
  • Jewish Federation of Broward County
  • Health Foundation of South Florida

By pooling resources, aligning funding strategies, and working in lockstep, these partners can make a far greater impact than any single organization could achieve alone.

Strengthening the Front Lines of Hunger Relief

With lead contributions from Broward County, Broward Health, Memorial Health System, Children’s Services Council, and Cleveland Clinic, funding from this partnership is supporting three key organizations on the front lines of hunger relief:

  • Feeding South Florida
  • Farm Share
  • United Way Broward’s Project Lifeline

Combined, these emergency funds helped to distribute approximately 2 million pounds of food, equivalent to more than 1.9 million meals, and $100,000 in grocery gift cards to families who need support now. This investment helps ensure food reaches households with the greatest need, including seniors, children, and working families struggling to keep up with rising costs.

A Community Standing Together

Addressing hunger requires all of us. We are grateful to our partners, donors, and the community organizations and volunteers who show up every day to support families across Broward County. Hunger is a shared challenge, and together, we are meeting this moment with urgency, compassion, and collective action.
