Collaborative Completes Continuum of Care for Monro County Residence
Florida Keys Area Health Education Center (Keys AHEC), The Good Health Clinic (GHC), and Womankind (WK) are trusted providers of comprehensive healthcare services across Monroe County. Keys AHEC is a long-time partner of the Health Foundation that operates the Monroe County School Health Initiative, offering health services to about 6,000 students annually. GHC is a free clinic providing medical care to nearly 900 uninsured, low-income residents of the Florida Keys via their Tavernier and Marathon locations. Formed in 2001 by two local nurse practitioners, WK has grown from a grassroots effort into an established and respected medical center serving nearly 2,700 women and men annually, with high-quality family planning and convenient healthcare.
In 2020, at the height of the COVID pandemic, these three organizations established a multi-agency collaborative to improve healthcare access for low-income children and adults in Monroe County. Health Foundation funds have been used to staff core service providers at each clinic, including hiring nurse practitioners and expanding the capacity for these safety net clinics. Additional staffing has allowed Keys AHEC to expand into dental services, GHC to provide mental health services, and WK to expand into primary care. In addition, as a collaborative, they have formalized how they work together, establishing a shared patient list and enabling warm referrals that connect patients to the right provider at the right time.
