What We Do
As the largest not-for-profit grantmaking organization dedicated solely to health in South Florida, we work to make our region a healthier place for all. Our support fuels programs, policies and systems change to make it possible for people to get and stay healthy in Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties.
Great strides have been made since we began in 1993, but the path to progress in ensuring health equity is not a solo journey. By engaging a broad network of effective partnerships, including elected officials, government agencies, business leaders, other funders, and communities, we find and integrate smart, lasting solutions to key health issues.
In today’s changing world, Health Foundation is a beacon for stability. Through the hard work of our grantees, the dedication of our Board of Directors and staff, we’re committed to turning challenges into opportunities for healthy choices for all South Floridians.

Health Foundation of South Florida’s roots trace back to 1960 when Cedars Medical Center of Miami (now University of Miami Hospital) was founded as a charitable hospital. It became a grantmaking foundation in 1993, when majority interest of the hospital was sold to Columbia /HCA Corporation. The Foundation received an endowment from the sale and was renamed Health Foundation of South Florida. In 2001, the Foundation sold its interest in the hospital and increased its endowment from approximately $50 million to $135 million.
More than $120 million grantmaking dollars since its inception, Health Foundation continues to work with strong networks of leaders with a shared focus on helping people live healthier lives.
